European Commission initiated an in-depth investigation regarding Essilor and Luxottica merger

European Commission has initiated an in-depth investigation to evaluate whether the proposed merger between Essilor and Luxottica may reduce competition regarding ophthalmic lenses. The European Commission will also investigate the effects of the proposed merger in the optical market. Essilor is the largest supplier of ophthalmic lenses whereas Luxottica is the largest supplier of eyewear (with its powerful brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley) both worldwide and in Europe. The European Commission has concerns that the proposed merger may result in exclusion of rival lens suppliers as use of Luxottica’s strong brands may lead opticians to buy Essilor’s lenses through tying and bundling. The press release dated September 26, 2017 about in-depth investigation is available via http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-17-3481_en.htm
